“The insights and methods of modern applied microeconomics play an important role across nearly all policy areas. Contributing to evidence-based policymaking in the Swiss healthcare through causal empirical research motivates my work. Only in this way can we ensure fair and efficient access to the healthcare system for everyone.”

Nicolas Schreiner has been with the CSS Institute since January 2021, initially as a research associate and, since April 2023, as a scientific project manager. Previously, he worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Political Economy at the University of Basel, where he completed his PhD in Economics in 2020. His dissertation examined how institutions across various domains influence individual behavior.

At the CSS Institute, Nicolas’s research currently focuses on how financial incentives compare to patient information in shaping healthcare demand. Additionally, his work explores topics such as the effects of temporary restrictions in primary care and the impact of financial hardships on healthcare utilization. Nicolas is particularly interested in applying the latest methods of causal inference, such as causal machine learning, to his research.
