At the invitation of the Talma Institute at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Nicolas Schreiner participated as a guest speaker in the institute’s annual conference. Addressing a diverse audience of researchers, health insurance representatives, and health policy officials, he presented recent findings from the CSS Institute on how targeted patient information can support better health care decisions.
The presentation also focused on the new Article 56a of the Swiss Health Insurance Act, to whose development research by the CSS Institute contributed. Since July 1, 2026, health insurers have been permitted to use claims data from mandatory health insurance to provide policyholders with targeted information about lower-cost treatment alternatives, appropriate preventive measures, or insurance plans that may better suit their needs.
These new opportunities expand the role of health insurers and can help patients make decisions that better reflect their individual needs and preferences. At the same time, Nicolas Schreiner emphasized that successful implementation requires health insurers to establish new, evidence-based processes and that the associated cultural shift will take time.
